The Contract Is Measured In Power

The new Hut 8 agreement covers 352 megawatts of information-technology capacity and doubles an unnamed investment-grade tenant’s commitment at Beacon Point to 704 MW. Hut 8 said the campus now carries $19.6 billion in base-term contracted value, potentially rising to $50.2 billion if renewal options are exercised.

Across its portfolio, Hut 8 has contracted 949 MW of AI data-center capacity backed by 1,330 MW of utility capacity. The company expects to begin delivering the first Phase 2 data hall in the second quarter of 2028.

The structure of the announcement is the story. A former cryptocurrency miner is now leasing electricity, grid access and construction-ready land to AI customers. The chips are important, but a graphics processor without a substation is a decorative rectangle.

The Public Has Entered The Queue

On July 18, organizers coordinated 142 demonstrations in 42 states. Texas hosted 18, Georgia 11 and California eight. A June Reuters/Ipsos poll found only 14% of respondents would support an AI data center in their own community, while roughly one-third approved of the national construction pace.

Organizers demanded transparent approvals, water and environmental safeguards, enforceable developer accountability and community benefits including well-paid union jobs. Reuters reported that attendance was lower than expected at some rallies and that organizers did not provide a nationwide attendance total. The breadth of the actions is verified; their scale at each location varied.

New York had already imposed a one-year moratorium on new hyperscale facilities using 50 MW or more. Meta, meanwhile, said on July 13 that its Hyperion campus in Louisiana would eventually reach 5 GW and cost more than $50 billion. One state paused the industry while another prepared to power something roughly equivalent to several large generating stations. Federalism is functioning normally.

Jobs During Construction, Servers Thereafter

Building-trades unions have supported many data-center projects because they require electricians, pipefitters, ironworkers and other skilled workers. Google says a $10 million grant to a union-backed training program could expand the electrician pipeline by 70%. The Associated Press reported that union labor agreements cover several major projects.

The political tension arrives after construction. Data centers require substantial electricity, land and cooling infrastructure but comparatively modest permanent operating staffs. Communities are increasingly asking whether construction work and tax revenue compensate for long-run power, water and ratepayer exposure.

The AI industry wanted scale. It has obtained a new scale for measuring opposition: protests per state, megawatts per project and weeks until the next zoning hearing.

Speaking on public broadcaster France 2, Bregeon pointed directly to events in the Middle East as the reason behind the increase at the pump. “These are obviously the consequences of what is happening in the Middle East. The French know this and I understand that it is very difficult for many of our fellow citizens,” she said, referring to fluctuations that are hard to anticipate.

She offered no forecast. “The trend as we speak is upward. I am not able to tell you what will happen in the coming days or weeks,” Bregeon said.

Support runs until the end of August

The government has put assistance in place for what Bregeon called “the most exposed sectors” and “the most vulnerable French citizens” to soften the blow of higher prices. That aid is still running, she said, and people who qualify can draw on it until the end of August.

Whether the measures will be extended beyond that date remains open. Asked about a possible extension, Bregeon said the government “will take stock by the end of August.”

Oil prices rebound since July

Oil prices have climbed back since the start of July. Renewed hostilities in the region reversed part of the drop that followed an interim agreement between the United States and Iran, a deal that had raised expectations of safer transit through the Strait of Hormuz and more regional energy supply reaching the market.

The latest escalation has also dimmed the prospect of fresh talks. Tehran is demanding that Washington first deliver on earlier commitments regarding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian oil exports before negotiations resume.

The Capacity Arrived

IRENA said renewable electricity generation grew 9.8% in 2024, compared with 1.4% growth for nonrenewable generation. Renewables generated 9,836 terawatt-hours worldwide: 4,589 TWh in Asia, 1,758 TWh in Europe and 1,535 TWh in North America.

Revised IRENA data show that the world installed a record 693 gigawatts of renewable capacity in 2025. Total renewable capacity reached 5.2 terawatts, and renewables accounted for 85.7% of all capacity additions that year.

These are not projections. The panels, turbines and hydroelectric plants exist. The remaining work is the less photogenic business of transmission, storage, balancing, pricing and persuading a planning office that an interconnection queue is not a generation technology.

Europe Discovers Daylight

Solar produced a record 52 TWh in the European Union in June, or 25% of the bloc’s electricity, according to an Ember analysis published July 14. That put solar ahead of nuclear at 21%, gas at 15%, wind at 14%, hydro at 12% and coal at 8%.

Spain obtained 34% of its June electricity from solar, Germany 36% and Poland 24%. Eighteen EU member states had set new monthly solar-share records during 2026 by the time Ember published its analysis.

A quarter of EU electricity came from a source that stops generating every evening, which is not an argument against solar so much as an unusually direct request for batteries, flexible demand and functioning cross-border grids. Europe responded on July 20 by reviving discussion of a Portugal-Morocco interconnector. Iberia currently connects only 3% of its electricity capacity to neighboring European countries, compared with the EU’s 15% target for 2030.

China Builds The Battery, Then Checks The Instructions

China held more than half of global battery-energy-storage capacity at the end of 2025 and had nearly 150 GW of lithium-ion storage by the first quarter of 2026, according to Ember. China raised its 2030 target for “new energy storage” to 300 GW in June.

Scale is no longer the immediate problem. Utilization is. Ember found that renewable projects with co-located batteries still cycled about 100 fewer times per year than standalone storage facilities. Its modeled estimate suggests the 2025 utility-scale battery fleet could have shifted 23 TWh more renewable electricity if operated at 350 cycles per year. That figure is a counterfactual, not electricity that was actually delivered.

The global transition has thus entered its mature phase: capacity records arrive monthly, storage records quarterly and institutional coordination on the traditional two-week schedule. Nothing is happening except an entire power system changing faster than its paperwork.
